Thirty-three printable working memory worksheets for adults: eleven working memory exercises, each at three levels, on clear picture pages. Every page shows its steps in pictures (look, cover, answer), and nothing the person needs to remember can be read off the page while they answer. Use them as working memory activities in therapy sessions, memory groups or at home.
Designed by a clinician with 10+ years in brain injury and cognitive rehabilitation.
What's included (33 worksheets in a 48-page PDF, plus 28 pages of answer keys):
- 11 basic worksheets: a little to hold in mind, with worked examples where they help
- 11 moderate worksheets: more to hold, and more to do while holding it
- 11 complex worksheets: longer sequences, look-alike pictures and a map from memory
- 12 partner pages with what to read aloud and the answers, for the four exercises a partner leads
- A window card and two cover cards to print, and a how-to-use page with all eleven exercises at a glance
- Answer keys in their own PDF; name and date fields; US Letter, print-ready
The eleven working memory exercises: hold and reverse (a row of pictures, last one first), sort in your head (smallest to biggest), keep track (the last of each group), two back (check a picture that matches the one two before), do and hold (answer a question while holding pictures in mind), listen and point, spot the change, where was it (what went where), route in mind (directions around a small town), running list (the last few of a list that stops without warning) and follow the steps (hold a short plan, then do it).
Built on known tasks: each exercise is a paper version of a classic working memory task, such as backward span, keep-track, n-back, complex span, listening span, change detection, object-location memory, the Brooks matrix, running span and following instructions, drawn with everyday pictures.
How it's graded: A is basic, B moderate and C complex. Each level adds more to hold in mind or more to do while holding it: three pictures become six, one back becomes two back, and the town map in view becomes a map from memory.
Who it's for: occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and rehab programs working on working memory after stroke or brain injury, and family members practicing at home. Seven exercises work on your own; four use a partner who reads aloud. The pictures are clear everyday things, with no letter or number grids and little reading.
Pairs well with: Memory Strategies Worksheets for Adults for everyday memory strategies, the Auditory Working Memory Task for listening recall with letters, and more ideas in our memory worksheets for adults guide.
